Thea Monyee´ defines JOY as every living thing’s innate and inextricable birthright, to choose at any moment, what brings them the maximum experience of aliveness they desire---without abusing or dehumanizing others.
Her JOY mission seeks to ensure every human being understands their JOY is a birthright, and can be engaged using the following four pillars:
Joy Curiosity
Joy Experiences
Joy Politics
Joy Culture.
With the help of a joy-led cohort of mental health practitioners, educators, somatic workers and more,
The BlackerThe Brain Joy Assessment was created as a FREE tool to assess joy in our day to day lives.
This work is rooted in our belief that joy can be used as a powerful metric for aliveness.

This pillar focuses on increasing our awareness of joy in everyday life and settings, and harvesting the simple choices that expand joy and make us accountable for our choices and the life we are creating.
Joy curiosity focuses on the senses, making our choices and our joy tangible, and defining joy for ourselves.

This pillar seeks to empower populations and individuals to bravely create and engage daily joy experiences, in order to maximize joy opportunities/challenges.
This is where we begin to see the power of cause and effect. We take our time unpacking the layers of joy barriers around us (sociopolitical and institutional), within us (cultural and familial), and gently confront them.
This pillar includes a deep relationship with grief, which can be explored further through Thea's co-stewarded project, Bringing Flowers, with Akilah S. Richards.

This pillar focuses on our commitment to curating and activating joy practices and metrics into systems and institutions, including all levels of governance and social care, both global and domestic.
Often we think of joy from the perspective of the individual, however, this pillar reminds us that the Macro reflects the Micro.
Ensuring individuals live in societies that prioritize joy as a metric for well being and success is a key part of our mission.

We believe that shared global language, practices, metrics, policies, & art that promote joy as an effective instrument for positive human change, and a sustainable way of life to repair the relationship between humans & the earth.
This pillar encourages shared practices, experiences, data exchange, and more through travel experiences and arts.
